Journalists are the chroniclers, observers, and agents of change in their era.

Recently, Hu Hongwei, Vice Chairman of the Ecological Content Committee at The Paper and an experienced senior journalist, delivered a lecture titled The Logic and Methods of In-Depth Reportingat our college. Drawing on his rich professional experience and socially significant news reports, Hu provided students with a fresh perspective on journalism. The lecture, hosted by Professor Wu Hongyu, was an enlightening exploration of what it takes to excel in in-depth reporting.

As a veteran journalist, Hu has spent decades studying the evolution of Chinas economy and society during periods of transformation. His research spans regional economic comparisons and the history of private enterprise reform, fields in which he has developed unique insights and significant academic achievements.

During his lecture, Hu emphasized that mastering in-depth reporting requires both a strategic understanding of the big picture and the practical skills to uncover compelling stories. He explored this balance by addressing three key areas: life philosophy, practical techniques, and the mission and responsibility of journalists. His thoughtful insights offered students not only practical guidance but also a deeper appreciation of the professions value and purpose.

In-Depth Reporting:From a Job to a Way of Life

Hu opened with the thought-provoking idea that Life is an in-depth report, framing journalism as more than a careerits a philosophy. Reflecting on his 38-year career, he explained that the heart of in-depth reporting lies in holding onto professional values while using long-term practice to refine ones understanding of the world.

Writing an in-depth report on life isnt a decision you make in a single dayits a process that unfolds over a lifetime.Hu stressed that journalists arent merely recorders; they are observers and thinkers who engage with the world on a deeper level. He shared his initial motivations for joining the field, explaining that the true essence of in-depth reporting is gaining a profound understanding of society and humanity, with the ultimate goal of driving positive change.

Tools and Techniques:The Practical Side of In-Depth Reporting

Hu shared his methodology for producing impactful in-depth reports, using his investigative work in Wenzhou as a case study. He underscored the importance of maintaining both a broad, strategic view and an ability to connect with grassroots realities.

Precise data collection, keen social observation, and sharp analysis of current events are the cornerstones of in-depth reporting,he noted. Hu illustrated these principles with his research into Ru Guanqius enterprise, showing how to sift through large amounts of data to uncover meaningful stories and patterns.

Values and Career Path:A Journalists Mission

Hu concluded the lecture by discussing the crucial role of personal values in shaping professional success. Your values will determine the height you can reach and the depth you can explore,he remarked. He explained that in-depth reporting uses individual stories to highlight societal issues, influencing public perception in meaningful ways. Addressing the current media environment, Hu urged students to resist the traffic mindsetof chasing clicks and instead stay committed to truth and integrity in their work.

He encouraged students to embrace their passions when choosing a career, rather than conforming to external definitions of success. Each of us has a unique role in society,he said. A meaningful life comes from doing one thing well and sticking with it.

Takeaways:A Lifelong Commitment to Journalism

This lecture left students reflecting on how to remain true to their aspirations in a complex and fast-changing world. Professor Wu Hongyu summarized the session, saying, As Xiang Biao wrote in Self as Method, in-depth reporting is a lifelong calling. What Professor Hu shared about the principlesof journalism will help students approach reporting with greater insight, allowing them to push their own boundaries.
