On November 19, Above Water, a documentary directed by Professor Jin Xingzheng, a Hundred Talents Program researcher from our college, won the Best Feature Documentary Award and Best Director Award at the 8th (2023) Zhejiang Documentary Dangui Awards. The awards are organized by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture, Radio, Television, and Tourism, along with the Zhejiang Documentary Association, to recognize outstanding documentary works and creators while promoting the growth of the documentary industry in Zhejiang.
Above Water chronicles the extraordinary journey of China’s national para-athletes as they prepared for the Paralympic Games. Facing physical challenges, these athletes displayed incredible resilience and determination, leaving behind countless inspiring moments and profound life insights both on and off the field. Ultimately, they achieved remarkable results at the Paralympic Games, gaining confidence for themselves and bringing honor to their country. The film also highlights the open-mindedness and inclusive spirit of the differently-abled community.
“The title Above Water not only symbolizes the athletes’ achievements in the water but also represents the extensive support behind their success,” explained Director Jin Xingzheng. “This includes the accompaniment of their parents, the encouragement of peers, the dedication of their coaches, and the backing of national policies.”
Prior to winning the awards, Above Water was included in the 14th Five-Year Plan Key Documentary Projects by the National Radio and Television Administration. It also received support from the Zhejiang Culture and Arts Development Fund and the Hangzhou Cultural Excellence Program. The film was selected for the 2023 Guangzhou International Documentary Festival, the 2023 China Documentary Academy Awards, and the 2nd West Lake International Documentary Conference IDF Pitching Session. It premiered in theaters nationwide on October 22, 2023, and is scheduled for broadcast on Phoenix TV’s Chinese, Hong Kong, American, and European channels on August 29, 2024.
