On the afternoon of November 10, Zhejiang University hosted the Digital Journalism and Journalism Studies forum and the launch of the new book Digital Journalism: Concepts, Values, and the Reconstruction of Order in Hangzhou. The event gathered 38 experts and scholars from top institutions, including Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Nanjing University, Beijing Normal University, Jinan University, and Shanghai University.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Professor Zhao Yu, Vice Dean of the College of Media and International Culture at Zhejiang University. Professor Zhou Jianghong, Vice President of Zhejiang University, delivered the opening remarks on behalf of the organizers, warmly welcoming the experts and scholars to the forum.
Zhou Jianghong introduced the development journey of Zhejiang University's Digital Social Sciences Convergence Research Program and the outstanding achievements of the university’s Digital School initiative. He highlighted the significance of the new book authored by Professors Wu Fei, Zhao Yu, and Hundred Talents Program researcher Sun Mengru, which examines how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data analysis, and blockchain are reshaping digital journalism. The book addresses key questions about the role of journalism in society and its relationship with public life.
Professor Fang Xingdong, Executive Dean of the College of Media and International Culture, emphasized in his speech that the forum provides a valuable opportunity for academic discussions on revitalizing journalism studies. He noted that the college would leverage its strengths in internationalization and technological innovation to further advance the discipline.
Zhang Chen, Deputy General Manager of Zhejiang University Press, introduced the Digital Social Sciences Series and congratulated the authors on the publication of Digital Journalism: Concepts, Values, and the Reconstruction of Order. She remarked that the book fills a gap in digital journalism studies and will contribute to the deeper development of the field in China.
During the book launch ceremony, notable academics and industry leaders, including Zhou Jianghong (Vice President of Zhejiang University), Xiong Chengyu (Senior Professor at the Communication University of China), Chen Long (Dean of the School of Media at Soochow University), Chen Changfeng (Professor at Tsinghua University), Liu Tao (Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at Jinan University), Yu Guoming (Professor and former Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at Beijing Normal University), Fang Xingdong, Wu Fei (Professor and Deputy Director of the Humanities Division at Zhejiang University), and Wei Lu (Professor and Vice President of Zhejiang Media College), jointly celebrated the publication of the book led by Professor Wu Fei.
The forum featured a free discussion session on the theme of Digital Journalism and Journalism Studies, moderated by Professor Wu Fei. Experts from across the country shared their insights, including faculty from Fudan University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics, Soochow University, Shanghai University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Renmin University of China, China University of Metrology, and other institutions. They addressed the opportunities and challenges posed by digital technologies in the field of journalism and explored future directions for the discipline.
Participants from Zhejiang University included leading academics and researchers, such as distinguished researchers Cheng Xiaoxiao and Ding Miaomiao, Associate Director of the Institute of Journalism and Social Development Gao Fangfang, Hundred Talents Program scholars Huang Guangsheng, Li Siyue, and Sun Mengru, and Vice Dean Zhao Yu. External experts included senior scholars such as Bai Hongyi (Fudan University), Chen Changfeng (Tsinghua University), and others from over 20 prominent institutions.
In her closing remarks, Professor Zhao Yu summarized the forum's highlights and expressed deep gratitude to the participants for their profound academic insights and contributions. The event concluded successfully with resounding applause, marking another milestone in the exploration of digital journalism and its future development.
